Press Release

Senator William "Mo" Cowan to Lead Litigation & Legal Policy at GE

February 16, 2017

BOSTON, Mass. - Feb. 14, 2017 - GE announced today that Senator William “Mo” Cowan has been named Vice President, Litigation and Legal Policy, effective April 1, 2017.  In this role, he will be responsible for litigation, enforcement proceedings, investigations and compliance globally for GE.  He will also continue to help lead GE’s Boston team, advising senior GE leaders and engaging with the City and State as the company moves forward with the construction of its new global headquarters campus in the Fort Point Channel neighborhood.

Prior to joining GE, Senator Cowan was President and Chief Executive Officer of ML Strategies, which provides government relations and consulting services to clients, and Of Counsel to Mintz Levin. Prior to rejoining Mintz Levin, where he practiced from 1997 to 2009, Senator Cowan represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as interim United States Senator, filling the vacancy created when John F. Kerry was appointed United States Secretary of State.

“When GE began its discussions with the City of Boston and Commonwealth of Massachusetts over the potential relocation of our HQ, we immediately reached out to Mo to help us navigate the complexities of the regulatory process and craft the agreement that ultimately set the stage for our move to Boston,” said Alex Dimitrief, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, GE.  “Mo has been a key partner in our work since we announced our relocation, providing his strategic, political and legal expertise to support GE’s acquisition and permitting of our permanent HQ site in the Fort Point Channel neighborhood.  Mo is also a superb lawyer with a broad range of experience and we are excited to have him join and help lead our world-class litigation and compliance teams in the years ahead.”

“I have been fortunate to work with GE over many years - including most recently with a great team at Mintz Levin and ML Strategies - and am thrilled to have this opportunity to concentrate my efforts on helping the company prosper in Boston and beyond,” said Senator Cowan.

“GE could not have picked a better lawyer and person than Mo for this esteemed position,” said Bob Bodian, Managing Member of Mintz Levin. “Mo not only is an accomplished and thoughtful litigator, but he brings with him his good judgment, character, sense of community, and responsibility that will serve him well in his new position. We wish our good friend and colleague all the best and look forward to the opportunity to continue to work with Mo and our valued client GE for years to come.”

Immediately prior to his Senate service, Senator Cowan served in several leadership positions for Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick, including Chief Legal Counsel (2009 to 2011), Chief of Staff (2011 to 2013) and Senior Advisor (2013). Prior to his distinguished career in public service, Mo was a Member in Mintz Levin’s Litigation Section where he represented a diverse array of commercial clients in matters involving corporate governance, financial mismanagement and malfeasance and money laundering investigations.
