GEH President & CEO Calls for Federal Action to Support the Development of Advanced Nuclear Reactors

August 11, 2016

ASPEN, Colorado-August 11, 2016-GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) President and CEO Jay Wileman has called for business leaders, elected officials and the federal government to work together to help support the commercialization of advanced nuclear reactor technology. Wileman’s comments came during an Aspen Institute panel discussion yesterday on the future of nuclear energy.

“We applaud the U.S. Department of Energy’s increased emphasis on supporting private sector initiatives to advance a new generation of reactor technologies,” Wileman said. “We are seeing significant global opportunities for our PRISM advanced reactor technology but in order for us to move forward, we must gain the support of the federal government on specific developmental milestone projects.”

As the largest source of clean electricity in the U.S., nuclear energy plays a critical role in meeting the nation’s clean air goals. During a panel discussion led by Steve Kuczynski, chairman, president and CEO, Southern Nuclear and Phil Sharp, president, Resources for the Future, Wileman said the PRISM advanced reactor is designed not only to generate low-carbon electricity but also to help achieve used nuclear fuel disposal goals. As a sodium-cooled, high energy neutron (fast) reactor, the PRISM design can extract energy from used nuclear fuel to generate electricity.

A draft report recently issued by the U.S. Department of Energy envisions that by 2050 “advanced reactors will provide a significant and growing component of the nuclear energy mix both domestically and globally, due to their advantages in terms of improved safety, cost, performance, sustainability, and reduced proliferation risk.”
