GE successfully completes NTPC's first WFGD System at Vindhyachal Power Plant

April 16, 2018
  • Marks first limestone-based wet flue gas desulphurization (WFGD) unit commissioned in an NTPC power plant suitable for 100% gas flow continuous operation
  • Strengthens GE’s position in the WFGD market by adding to worldwide installed base of approximately 60 GW

New Delhi - April 11, 2018: Setting a milestone for adoption of cleaner coal technologies in India, GE announced today the successful completion of the first turnkey full flow wet flue gas desulphurization (WFGD) unit at NTPC’s 500 MW Super Thermal Power project site in Vindhyachal, Madhya Pradesh. The FGD installation at Vindhyachal is the first limestone-based WFGD commissioned in an NTPC power plant suitable for continuous operation at 500 MW unit for 100% gas flow.

GE’s scope of work in the project includes delivery of the WFGD system for the 1x500 MW pulverized coal-fired boiler unit on full turnkey basis, including designing, engineering, manufacturing, testing, civil works, erection and commissioning. This is a key step towards implementing SOx control systems mandated by India’s Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to reduce the emissions of thermal power plants.

Andrew DeLeone, Managing Director - GE Power India Limited, said, "World over, the economics of power generation have become tighter and regulations have become even stricter. As India strives to attain the right mix of fuel sources to meet increasing demand and emissions goals, curbing SO2 emissions is a foremost priority. FGDs will play an instrumental role in transforming power plants to reduce their environmental impact. It is a proud moment for GE to be associated with this project and with NTPC, a customer we deeply value. The successful completion of trial operation of this turn-key full flow FGD system puts GE Power in a unique position in the country as India gears-up to implement DeSOx solutions in an installed base in excess of 150 GW.”

GE is an industry leader in cleaner power generation from coal with a broad portfolio of air quality control systems that can help further lower atmospheric emissions. For thermal plants, GE offers emission control solutions with high collection efficiency, reduced capital costs, and low auxiliary power loads.

Today’s milestone further strengthens GE’s position in the FGD market, with a worldwide installed base of approximately 60 GW. GE’s other FGD installations in India include sea water based FGD systems at Tata Power, JSW Ratnagiri and Adani Mundra.
