GE Secures 100th Unit Ordered for its HA Gas Turbine for MYTILINEOS’ Agios Nikolaos Power Plant in Greece

September 30, 2019
  • GE will provide the company’s largest and most efficient gas turbine, the 9HA.02, for the Agios Nikolaos project extension.
  • Agios Nikolaos Power Plant will be one of the most efficient power plants in Europe
  • Additionally, GE will provide services through a 15-year multi-year services agreement

ATHENS—Sept. 30, 2019—GE Power (NYSE: GE) announced today that MYTILINEOS S.A., a leading Greek industrial company, has ordered a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine to be the heart of one of the largest natural gas-fired combined cycle power plants in Europe at the Agios Nikolaos Power Plant in Greece. This order also marks the 100th unit of GE’s HA gas turbine ordered, the world’s fastest growing fleet of gas turbines. The 9HA.02 is GE’s largest and most efficient gas turbine that powers the world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant, and its installation at Agios Nikolaos will be the first HA gas turbine installed in Greece.

This order also includes a GE steam turbine and generator, as well as a 15-year services agreement. Located in Voiotia region of central Greece, the Agios Nikolaos Power Plant will produce 826 megawatts (MW) and construction on the plant is planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“We are very proud that the Agios Nikolaos Power Plant will be one of the most efficient power plants in Europe and the entire world using GE’s latest and most efficient gas turbine technology, the 9HA.02,” said Evangelos Mytilineos, President and CEO of MYTILINEOS. “GE’s technology, combined with the engineering and construction expertise of our EPC business unit METKA, will bring this large investment to life and help contribute significantly to Greece’s energy security and stability.”

Agios Nikolaos Power Plant is planned to begin commercial operation in late 2021. When operational, the plant is estimated to produce a thermal efficiency in excess of 63% - making it one of the most efficient power plants in Europe. The power plant will also help substantially reduce emissions and is estimated to reduce emissions by up to 25% compared to a similar lignite-fired facility.

"GE is honored to work with MYTILINEOS to bring the first HA gas turbine to Greece and to mark an incredible milestone of 100 HA gas turbine orders, all while helping modernize the Agios Nikolaos CCPP Power Plant with the HA’s record-setting performance and efficiency," said Scott Strazik, President and CEO of GE’s Gas Power business. "By investing in state-of-the-art technology, the Agios Nikolaos plant will supply flexible and reliable electricity to Greece, helping the country to meet energy emissions and security goals.”

With the addition of this plant, the total production capacity of MYTILINEOS will exceed 2000 MW, excluding Renewable Energy Source capacity (RES), contributing significantly to the country's energy security and supplying electricity to neighbouring countries.

Today, GE’s HA gas turbines have achieved several notable milestones: the 40 HA units in commercial operation across the globe have achieved more than 415,000 operating hours, supplying more than 18 gigawatts (GW) of power to the grid, or the equivalent electricity needed to power more than 13.5 million US homes.

With today’s announcement, GE is celebrating its 100th unit order for its HA technology across the globe. The company has secured these 100 unit orders from 40 customers across more than 18 countries. Recently, GE announced HA turbine orders in Europe for the Orot Rabin project in Israel, and in the United States for projects in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.
