GE Renewable Energy launches its latest Remote Operation Center in Barcelona

April 03, 2019
  • The Barcelona Center is GE Renewable Energy's fourth Remote Operation Center (ROC) in operation around the world
  • The Barcelona ROC monitors 2,000+ turbines across South Europe
  • In total, GE Renewable Energy's Remote Operations Centers monitor more than 15,000 Onshore and Offshore wind, Solar and Energy Storage assets around the world 24/7

Bilbao, April 3rd, 2019 - GE Renewable Energy today announced the launch of its newest Remote Operation Center (ROC) in Spain. The Barcelona ROC is capable of monitoring 2,000+ turbines, bringing the total number of units the company is monitoring to more than 15,000 Onshore and Offshore wind, Solar and Energy Storage assets around the world.

The fourth Center of its kind for GE Renewable Energy, the Barcelona ROC will be a local hub for digital innovation, promoting further agile development and integration between all the company's ROCs around the world. With the latest addition, GE Renewable Energy will be able to maximize and improve remote operations activities across the global fleet that GE monitors by securely leveraging data analyzed at its ROCs in Schenectady, New York; Salzbergen, Germany; Bangalore, India; and now Barcelona, Spain.

Currently monitoring fleets in Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Greece; the new ROC will cover all existing turbine types and models, as well as future machines, including GE's largest onshore wind turbine in operation to date, the Cypress platform.

Robin Goodman, General Manager for Onshore Wind Digital Services in Europe and SSA said, "our objective is to maximize the number of remote operations we can perform, in order to give our customers in South Europe a quicker response while minimizing the need to physically visit the sites and the associated costs. This translates to positive economic results based on a more efficient predictive maintenance approach."

The Barcelona ROC will eventually also monitor the turbines being installed in Aragón for Forestalia's wind parks. Doing so will enable GE Renewable Energy to offer customers across Spain data-driven insights, expert recommendations, and advanced field services less than 300 miles away and in their local language.
