GE Launches Latest Evolution of Its HA Gas Turbine to Power Florida Power & Light Company’s Dania Beach Facility

GREENVILLE, S.C.—October 2, 2019—Access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity is critical to growing economies and is fundamental to quality of life in the modern world. Helping to meet this growing need, GE (NYSE: GE) today launched the latest evolution of its HA gas turbine, the 7HA.03, which will power Florida Power & Light Company’s (FPL) Dania Beach Clean Energy Center near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Retaining a common architecture and heritage of GE’s HA gas turbine platform, the 7HA.03 is a step forward for the industry as the world’s largest, most-efficient, highest-capacity 60-hertz gas turbine with industry-leading flexibility and the lowest cost of conversion for gas to electricity. The 7HA.03 provides greater capacity and efficiency: offering 134 more megawatts than GE’s 7HA.02 gas turbine (2x1 CC) adding the equivalent electricity needed to power 100,500 more US homes, while increasing efficiency by 0.4 percent more than the 7HA.02 saving an estimated $0.9 M per year for US-based power plant operators.
The 7HA.03 gas turbine is an evolution of the company’s leading H-Class platform based on GE’s proven HA architecture representing 28 years of H-Class technology—maintaining consistency with past designs of the world’s fastest growing fleet of gas turbines. The 7HA.03 offers substantial improvements in three key areas: greater capacity and performance, enhanced flexibility, and lower capital costs and installation time.

The 7HA.03 offers several new design features, pulled from other HA designs, behind its unprecedented level of performance: a larger titanium R1 blade will enable greater airflow and output, while the adoption of GE’s DLN 2.6e combustion system—the first of its kind on a GE 60-hertz gas turbine—offers higher firing temperatures while maintaining emissions compliance. The ability to turndown to 30% load while still in emissions compliance, when combined with an improved ramp rate of 75 megawatts per minute—15 megawatts more than the 7HA.02—enhances power plant operators’ ability to rapidly respond to market and grid conditions.

FPL’s Dania Beach Clean Energy Center—located in Broward County, Florida—will be a marquee investment into advanced power generation technology and will be “one of the cleanest, most-efficient facilities of its kind in the world.” The new facility will also produce considerable economic benefits to FPL customers, including more than $300 million in net savings for FPL customers over the life of the project, as well as significant reductions in air emissions through the replacement of older generating technologies. In fact, the efficiency of the Dania Beach facility will enable FPL to reduce its system-wide use of natural gas.
GE’s 7HA.03 turbine—now available at >64% net combined cycle efficiency—will drive leading combined-cycle power plant performance using a simple, modular design that enables enhanced plant economics and faster installation for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partners. Currently, the 40 HA units in commercial operation globally are supplying 18 gigawatts of power, the equivalent electricity needed to power more than 13.5 million US homes.
GE’s fleet of HA gas turbines has surpassed more than 415,000 operating hours and secured 100 unit orders from 40 customers in 18 countries—GE recently announced its 100th HA unit order for the Agios Nikolaos Power Plant in Greece. In addition to strong commercial momentum, the insights the GE team has gained from operating data and on-site observations are fueling advances in its maintenance, repair and upgrade planning for the fleet.
