GE Announces Largest Single Jenbacher Gas Engine Order in China

December 09, 2015
  • GE Supplying Shanxi Jincheng Coal Group with 12 Jenbacher Gas Engines
  • Units to Generate 40 Megawatts in Expansion of Chengzhuang Coal Mine’s On-Site Power Plant
  • Project to Support China’s Efforts to Reduce Environmental Impacts of Coal Production

BEIJING-December 9, 2015-Announcing its largest single order of Jenbacher gas engines in China, GE (NYSE: GE) today said it will supply Shanxi Jincheng Coal Group with 12 of its Ecomagination qualified, 3.35-megawatt (MW) J620 gas engines for an expansion of a coal mine methane (CMM) gas-fueled power plant at the Chengzhuang coal mine in Jincheng City, Shanxi Province. The project is supporting the country’s efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of coal production.

When the 40-MW “Phase 2” expansion is completed in 2016, the entire gas engine power plant will generate a total of 58 MW of on-site power that will be sold to the local grid. By capturing the mine’s methane-rich gas to produce the on-site power in the Jenbacher engines, less of the potent greenhouse gas is free to escape into the atmosphere. The first phase of the power plant features nine older gas engines from another supplier.

“To meet the specific technology and service needs of the power plant, we chose GE’s Jenbacher J620 gas engine technology for the Chengzhuang project of Jincheng coal group,” said Diao Renhui, general manager of Jereh Combined Energy Corporation, a subsidiary of The Jereh Group that is GE’s engineering, procurement and construction partner on the project. “GE has the technology expertise and the supply chain capabilities to enable our quick delivery of engines to our customers. This project will enhance the energy efficiency of the existing plant and further reduce the Chengzhuang mine’s on-site methane emissions.”

While natural gas is expected to take on a larger role in China’s energy supply mix compared to coal and diesel, CMM gas is still expected to be a big growth segment for power generation within the next five years, especially in the Shanxi province where more than 30 percent of the country’s CMM reserves and 40 percent of production operations are located. The project also supports the government’s goals for CMM exploration and utilization to help reduce the country’s methane emissions.

“We are excited to be supporting the Shanxi Jincheng Coal Group’s coal mine gas-to-power expansion project with our largest gas engine order in China,” said Bright Yin, regional sales leader for GE’s Distributed Power business in China. “Our Jenbacher engines offer the high electrical efficiency and industry reputation of durability and reliability to support China’s ongoing commitment to reduce the environmental impacts of coal production.”

For the project, GE will provide commissioning services for the generator sets and related equipment.   In addition to the gas engines, the Jereh Combined Energy Corporation will provide equipment including the radiators, silencers, control panels, exhaust boilers, associated equipment as well as installation and other services.

The gas engines are scheduled to be delivered to the site in December 2015 with commercial operation expected to begin in March 2016.
