February 07, 2017
Conclusion of the agreement on strategic cooperation between the Ministry of Economic Development and General Electric has inaugurated the jubilee year of 25 years of GE business activity in Poland. Signing the document is a confirmation of joint aspirations of Polish government and GE aiming at supporting Polish economic growth, industry modernisation, performance of current and new investments, implementation of new technologies and supporting Polish labour market.

The agreement on the strategic cooperation was solemnly signed on the 26th of January in Warsaw, in EDC - Engineering Design Centre - the biggest European design centre being joint enterprise of the Institute of Aviation and General Electric. The signing parties were represented by Mateusz Morawiecki, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Economic Development and Finance and John G. Rice, GE Vice President.

Mateusz Morawiecki, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Economic Development and Finance - “The priority of our government is to continuously increase innovation of Polish economy. We want to advance the added value of products and services that are both being developed by local entrepreneurs or in close cooperation with foreign investors that offer unique values and development opportunities. For over 25 years of its operations in Poland General Electric has proven to be the high level partner for Polish economy, not only by providing high-tech solutions but also presenting confidence and trust in Polish engineering abilities. I am convinced that the next 25 years of our strategic partnership will deliver even greater mutual benefits and GE products developed in Poland will revolutionise international industry and promote skills and competences of Polish engineers all over the world.”

John G. Rice, GE Vice President - “Today’s agreement highlights the importance and value of our investment and business activity in Poland. This year we celebrate GE’s 125th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of GE in Poland - a great synergy - and this agreement further sets the stage for cooperation and collaboration between GE and the Polish government.”

The main objective of the strategic cooperation expressed in the signed document is to build stabile and long-term partnership between Polish government and GE in the areas of sustainable energy and aviation. It performance shall be realized in the scope of an open dialogue between the parties, based on mutual trust and predictability. Engagement of research and development centres created by GE in Poland as well as of advanced and innovative technologies manufactured in local facilities will make stability and durability of the implemented solutions possible .

Apart from declaration of will of close cooperation the agreement participants also expressed their intention to execute projects in the scope of research and development with participation of Polish educational institutions and research centres. GE declared its willingness to undertake actions which may guarantee real transfer of technological solutions to Poland and integration of operations among its manufacturing facilities and domestic research and development centres.

One point of the agreement referred also to the issue of increasing engagement of local suppliers, in particular of small and medium businesses, in GE global chain of supplies. Upon full consideration of specific nature of industry, strict quality requirements and legal regulations, as well as the factors connected with cost effectiveness, and whilst maintaining full compliance with the European Union and national principles of competition, GE expressed its willingness to continue increase of engagement of Polish suppliers in its chain of supplies.

Signing of the agreement on strategic cooperation also opened 2017 as the jubilee year of 25th  anniversary of GE presence in Poland. As one of the first international corporations, GE has actively participated in transformation of Polish economy after 1989. A quarter of a century of intense activity, realization of investments, implementation of new technologies and supporting development of Polish workers’ competences made GE one of the key partners for development of Polish economy.

GE, which was founded in the US 125 years ago, has developed strong connection to Polish economy over those last 25 years. Currently the company is employing in Poland ca. 6500 persons in industrial sector. GE group owns, among others: 3 plants specializing in manufacturing of electric products (in Kłodzko, Łódź and Bielsko-Biała), 2 facilities of GE Aviation (Dzierżoniów and Bielsko-Biała) and 3 GE Power plants (turbine manufacturing plant and foundry in Elbląg and generators manufacturing plant in Wrocław). Since 1992 GE has invested in Poland 670 mln USD while annual spending on R&D reach 100 mln USD.

GE provides modern solutions and advanced technology that are designed, developed and manufactured locally in Poland. Generators come from the plant in Wrocław, turbines from Elbląg facility, and power switching stations from Bielska Biała. Not only is Polish economy supported by manufactured machinery but also by the capital generated by local GE facilities. In case of currently performed development of Opole power plant, the biggest investment in power sector after 1989, almost 80 percent of expenditure incurred by GE for this project remain in Poland.

Engineering Design Centre (EDC) in Warsaw, being the biggest European design centre, was the obvious choice to hold the ceremony of signing of the agreement. EDC was founded in 2000 as public and private partnership - joint enterprise of the Institute of Aviation and General Electric. Nowadays, EDC is a team of 2000 including 1800 engineers who work in eight laboratories of global standard and who hold unique, on international scale, competences in various technological areas i.e. aviation, manufacturing and energy conversion, oil and gas exploration and transfer, digital technologies or industrial 3D print.

Polish engineers working in EDC are the experts of the highest quality, highly appreciated all over the world. They conduct complex projects connected with the most modern machinery for various industrial branches, including aviation and energy. Among the key achievements one has to mention the latest aircraft engines ATP and GEnx (GE Aviation), effective turbines (GE Power, GE Oil & Gas) and deep sea oil and gas exploration systems (GE Oil & Gas).

It is worth noticing that the projects are conducted in Warsaw from as early as their conceptual stage and these are the Polish engineers who manage many tasks. EDC also develops technological resources of Polish engineering by close cooperation with technological universities (strategic partnership with the Warsaw Technological University, co-founding of academic faculty with the Gdańsk Technological University). Talents and potential of Polish engineers was notices and appreciated by GE which decided to leave in Poland the intellectual property rights regarding elements of the ATP engine that is developed in EDC.  Technical experts of EDC are also the leaders and consultants for GE contracts, both domestic and European where they may use Polish suppliers of components and services and as such promote Polish technologies abroad.
