LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Oct. 28, 2014 - Although weather damage from natural disasters is devastating to a home, there can be beautiful renovations that come as a result. When Hurricane Sandy destroyed their New Jersey home in 2012, Tommy Mitchell and his wife Susan were forced to start over, and saw it as an opportunity to design the kitchen they always wanted. The couple said goodbye to their outdated all-white décor and chose a trendy gray design with GE Appliances’ Slate finish as the inspiration behind their new kitchen.
“We liked the layout of our kitchen, but wanted something different from what we had, which had come as-is with the home,” said Tommy Mitchell, homeowner and GE employee. “When we saw the new Slate appliances online, they immediately got our attention. We loved the finish so much that we had our kitchen designer create the entire kitchen around it.”
After removing the dated white and green laminate counters and wall tiles painted with fish artwork, the Mitchells worked with design experts to select new options that would best complement the Slate finish. They chose quartz countertops and glass tile for the backsplash to accent the gray tone of the Slate appliances. The couple was so pleased with the gray color scheme that they expanded it into the bathroom, using the same countertops and complementary tile and paint.

“What we like best about Slate is the finish and color,” Mitchell said. “It’s something different that we hadn’t seen before-not your typical stainless steel option-which we liked. You can also stick a magnet on it, and it’s resistant to finger prints, making it easy to keep clean with our big family.”
The Mitchells are not alone in their preference for Slate-since its initial launch in September 2012, GE’s Slate finish has grown in popularity-so much so that the company recently announced the second expansion into additional products. The company also took it a step further, collaborating with Pfister to introduce the first Slate kitchen and bath faucets.
Slate’s warm, gray, metallic hue with a low-gloss finish is a natural complement to the wide spectrum of home décor colors, and the dark matte appearance naturally hides fingerprints, smudges and dirt, making it easy to maintain and providing an alternative option to other popular finishes.
Gray has been one of the fastest-growing color schemes this year, and Slate complements this trend. The Mitchell family was able to successfully bring this trend to life and show how Slate can positively impact any home, in any circumstance.
