Yonggang Group to Install GE Cogeneration Systems Fueled with Blast Furnace Gas to Provide Cleaner Energy to Steel Mill

July 11, 2013

  • GE's Jenbacher Gas Engines to Power Combined Heating Plant at Jiangsu Yonggang Group
  • Modular Yonggang Power Plant in China to Be World's First Commercial BFG-Fueled Gas Engine Cogeneration Plant
  • Project Highlights Role of GE's Power Solutions in Metals Industry Worldwide

BEIJING---July 11, 2013---GE today announced Jiangsu Yonggang Group (YG Group) will install four of GE's (NYSE: GE) Jenbacher cogeneration systems that will be fueled with blast furnace gas (BFG). The project in China is the world's first gas engine cogeneration plant that will use BFG to generate cleaner power and heat for a steel mill.

Powered by four of GE's 1.97-megawatt (MW) J620 Jenbacher cogeneration units, the 7.88-MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant will offer a total efficiency of up to 83.5 percent to minimize the energy costs of YG Group's steel mill. The project also will reduce 63,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year at the mill.

Established in 1984 in the Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province, YG Group has developed into a large-scale integrated iron and steel enterprise, with a complete system for iron making, steel making and steel rolling. With more than 10,000 employees and covering an area of 2.33 square kilometers, the factory produces 5 million tons of steel.

YG Group is committed to becoming more energy efficient and "greener" in pursuit of innovation and excellence by utilizing the steel mill's process gases to achieve greater energy savings and reduced emissions.

"GE is well-known around the world for its steel industry energy solutions. We are very pleased to cooperate with GE on this BFG project and believe both companies will have a bright future with this successful project," said Mr. Yaofang Wu, general manager of YG Group. "GE is providing a cleaner and highly efficient gas engine solution to meet the development needs of the YG Group."

The Yonggang BFG power plant in China will be the first commercial gas engine BFG project in the world. The project illustrates the breadth of GE's product portfolio, which offers cleaner, highly efficient technologies to help customers reduce their emissions and energy costs.

GE plans to deliver the Jenbacher units by September 2013. Commercial start-up of the power plant is scheduled for the end of 2013.

The YG Group's on-site power project illustrates how GE's global leadership in steel mill gas-to-energy recovery projects supports a wide range of power outputs.

"GE is excited to have the opportunity to provide our highly efficient and cleaner Jenbacher on-site power technology to YG Group. With the full support of YG Group, we will have a successful start of the project that will enable the customer to really benefit from our solution," said Mr. Ming Yin, general manager of Gas Engines China---GE Power & Water.

Jiangsu JOYI Environmental Protection and Technology Co., Ltd. (JOYI) collaborated with GE's Jenbacher gas engines team on this project and will provide the entire power plant solution to YG Group.

GE's Jenbacher engine technology is part of the company's portfolio of innovative distributed power solutions, designed to give businesses and communities around the world the ability to generate reliable and efficient power using a variety of fuels on or off the grid. GE's distributed power portfolio also includes GE's aeroderivative gas turbines, Waukesha gas engines and Clean CycleTM waste heat recovery solutions.
